We all had a friend like Cliff, right?
I stopped by CD Cellar on my way home from church yesterday, where I saw Singles sitting in the used DVD rack. Inspired by Dex and our shared Cameron Crowe appreciation, I knew I had to add it to my collection at this golden opportunity.
Let me say it had been over ten years since I had seen it. And that’s a shame.
I watched it again last night. First, it reminded me of when I first saw it in the early 90’s and reminded me of old friends/romances/experiences. I was surprised by how much I had forgotten. I love the snapshot of the music scene in the early 90’s (Seattle grunge), and how dead on and universal much of the dialogue and themes are:
· The part where Linda unlocks the car door and Steve obsesses about the meanings.
· The part where Janet crumples up the paper and says if she makes it she calls, and the subsequent shots upon missing. (And how she’s ‘over’ Cliff when she’s on the roof but you see the phone and phone line stretching all the way up there just in case )
· The scene where Steve is getting advice from his friends and Linda is getting advice from her friends. Great editing on that for total comedic (and TRUE effect).
The part I had totally forgotten was everything about Debbie, particularly her video for Expect the Best. I think I need a video like that.
For the record, my friend like Cliff was a guy named "Bear." His real name was "Doyle," but everyone called him "Bear."

Dude, I need to borrow this DVD from you sometime. I don't think I've ever seen it.
I wanna be in on all the movie references and inside jokes.
