theater thoughts from dex

I did something out of the ordinary last night. Actually we did something, meaning my wife Tracy and me. We went to a play at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC called Measure For Measure. It was one of those experiences when you say to yourself, "why don't we do this more often?" (Then I look at the credit card bill and think, "oh, that's why...")

Two thoughts:
Tracy and I used to be regular attendees of the Shakespeare theater in Idaho. Watching this play really made us miss those summer nights, picnicing outside along the Boise river against the mountains of the Boise front. I once talked to a friend who moved to the east coast from Boise and he claimed that the only thing he missed was the Idaho Shakespeare Theater, nothing else, and his parents live near Boise!

In this Measure For Measure production in DC they use puppets to play some of the characters which I had never seen before. I'm sure there is a more proper term for this, but essentially an actor stands behind a caracture that he operates, sort of like a cross between a mannequin and a ventriloquist dummy. It was very interesting and in the end I thought it added to the play rather than distracted.

Well that about does it on my theater expertise. I would attend a play again in either setting, outside along the Boise river or two blocks from the US Capital.

I think we should all take a trip to Boise and visit this Shakespeare theater. I'll bring a few two-liters of warm, generic cola. Greggity and I could challenge Dex for the title of Mr. Chug-a-lug.
